wherein the usual coping skills fail. Crisis intervention is emotional
first aid designed to help a person cope during difficult circumstances.

Trauma Reactions of Crime Victimization
Person gets thrown into a state of turmoil by stressor(s) of trauma.
Their state of equilibrium gets thrown off balance.
Physical Reactions:
- Physical shock, numbness
- Fight or flight instinct
- Heart rate increases
- Hyperventilation
Emotional Reactions:
- Shock, disbelief, denial
- Confusion
- Feeling powerless
- Anger or rage
- Frustration
- Guilt or self-blame
- Shame and Humiliation
- Grief or sorrow
Reconstruction of a new equilibrium is an emotional process resembling a
roller-coaster ride. Crisis intervention and supportive counseling help
victims move to a new equilibrium more quickly.
Stress Reducers
- Alternate physical exercise with periods of relaxation
- Don't label yourself crazy--you are having normal reactions
- Talk to people--it is healing
- Keep a journal--write through sleepless nights
- Eat well-balanced, regular meals
- Don't abuse drugs or alcohol--it only complicates matters
